About Ferny Creek

bushland in ferny creek

Ferny Creek is a small township built on Dunn’s Hill in the Dandenong Ranges. It rests between the former Dandenong Ranges National Park and Sherbrooke Forest.

The town hosts a general store, post office, avenue of honour, tennis club, a recreation reserve, plant nursery, CFA fire station and numerous bed and breakfasts. It is generally one of the quieter suburbs in the Yarra Ranges, surrounded by conservation zones and national parks. The suburb was named after the small creek which runs through the majority of the town centre.

Due to extensive parkland and large residential blocks, the town maintains a rural character even compared to other locations in the Yarra Ranges. That can be hard to come by in Melbourne suburbs.

The Thousand Steps” are found here – a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. It is a bushwalking track built by Australian Army Engineers and draws people in as a fitness challenge. The track is a representation of the ordeals suffered by the Australian Army in Kokoda. The population of Ferny Creek swells on weekends; with many Melbournians making the trip to exercise on the Thousand Steps. Their cars line the sides of Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, but are generally not inconvenient to the locals.

The Ferny Creek Primary School sits in the middle of town and was established in 1895. Nearby schools include Sherbrooke Community School in Sassafras.

The primary demographic is older couples and families, similar to much of the Dandenong Ranges. Younger couples are slightly rarer.

The climate is slightly cooler than the rest of Melbourne due to the cooling effects Sherbrook Forest.

Ferny Creek is a high demand suburb at more than twice the demand of the average Melbourne suburb. Some properties have spectacular views overlooking the city.

Lease opportunities are rare in Ferny Creek, but do pop up occasionally.
