About Ferny Creek
Ferny Creek is a small township built on Dunn’s Hill in the Dandenong Ranges sitting between the former Dandenong Ranges National Park and Sherbrooke Forest.
The town is made up of a general store, post office, avenue of honour, tennis club, recreation reserve, plant nursery, CFA fire station and numerous bed and breakfasts. It is surrounded by conservation zones and national parks. The name came from Ferny Creek, the small stream which originates in the centre of the suburb, just South of Dunn’s Hill.
Due to extensive parkland and large residential blocks, Ferny Creek maintains a rural character that can be hard to come by in Melbourne suburbs.
Ferny Creek is home to “The Thousand Steps” a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. It is a bushwalking track built by Australian Army Engineers and draws people in as a fitness challenge. The track is meant to be a representation of the ordeals suffered by the Australian Army in Kokoda.
Ferny Creek is home to the Ferny Creek Primary School, which was established in 1895. Nearby schools include Sherbrooke Community School in Sassafras.
