Selby is a small hillside town which sits in the Dandenong Ranges, neighbouring Kallista, Belgrave and Menzies Creek.
The landscape around Selby is quite hilly, creating winding roads and beautiful surrounding landscapes and views. The nature of the hills attracts a decent amount of tourism which offsets the lack of farmable land. The town hosts the second station along the Puffing Billy Railway.
The main street of Selby runs along the steep Black Hill, which also contains a reserve. The street is very minimal, with a number of small businesses, a medical practise and the CFA fire brigade. It also hosts a monthly craft and produce market which shows an assortment of local goods such as cider, pies, local honey, meats, vegetables and various home made jewellery, accessories and gifts.
There is an abundance of wildlife in Selby including king parrots, galahs, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, black wallabies, echidnas, koalas and wombats, which are all frequently seen in the area by locals and tourists.
Selby is home to the Selby Primary School, who’s logo includes Puffing Billy and the historic trestle bridge.
