About Tecoma

Tecoma is a small town in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. It is nestled between Upwey and Belgrave.

The main strip consists of small local businesses. Various shops, restaurants and cafes sit along the top of a hill, providing beautiful views over the valley below. Access to public transportation is easy and plentiful. The train station is only a short walk away, as well as multiple bus stops along the main street.

Being right at the doorstep of the Dandenongs means that residents can enjoy the best of both worlds. Because while you get to enjoy the surrounds which are beautiful, green and full of trees and wild life, major shopping areas are only a short drive down the road. This gives the town a unique feeling of being small, remote and friendly while still offering the conveniences of modern society.

For those that are interested, Tecoma offers a strong alternative green scene, with places to purchase organic products and friendly shop owners that share those interests.

As a result of being so close to Belgrave, Tecoma shares many of it’s main attractions. These include Puffing Billy Railway Station, Belgrave Lake Park, and the Birdsland Reserve in Belgrave Heights. The Dandenong Creek Trail is an 8km shared path for cyclists and pedestrians. It starts at Belgrave Station and runs through the town. Because of it’s path through the hills in the scenic surrounding forests, the trail is perfect for walking, running, nature trips, bird watching and of course taking the dog for a walk.

Tecoma is home to a small primary school, but there are also alternative schools nearby in Belgrave and Upwey.

Tecoma Demographics

Because it is such a small town built on the hills between Belgrave and Upwey, Tecoma has a fairly small population. According to the 2016 census, the population was 2,082, with 50.2% female and 49.8% male and a median age of 41.
